France is a republic in Western Europe with several overseas territories and islands. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean.


It covers 547 030 km2, having the largest area among European Union members. Metropolitan France is often referred to as "l'Hexagone ("The Hexagone") because of the geometric shape of its territory.

With 66 million people, France has the world's fifth largest economy and the second largest economy in Europe. In 2010, France was the world's 18th country by GDP per capita with $ 40591 per inhabitant.
Fance possesses a wide variety of landscapes, from coastal plains in the north and west to mountain ranges of the Alps in the south-east, the Massif Central in the south-central and Pyrenées in the south-west. France is the most visited ocuntry in the world, receiving 82 million foreign tourists annually.
Fance is also a maritime country, ranking second in the world with 11 million km2, thousands of km of shore and millions of people sharing a passion for the sea, particularly so on the shores of the Atlantic and Channel.
